Alex Jiao, Phd. Science & technology
Alex received his PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Washington in 2016. His research focused on stem cell biology, cardiac tissue engineering, and biomaterial nano/microfabrication. He developed a novel, patent-pending platform for the engineering of 3D tissues with controllable architectures. Using this developed platform, Alex engineered biomimetic skeletal muscle and cardiac tissues. Using human patient-derived stem cells, Alex’s investigation into engineered 3D cardiac tissues highlighted the importance of 3D tissue structure on enhancing tissue function. These findings will lead to improve diagnostics, tissue models, and therapies for heart disease and personalized medicine.
Prior to UW, Alex was an undergraduate researcher at Northwestern University and the University of Michigan, focused on biomaterials, tissue engineering and stem cell biology. He has extensive experience in platform development, cell biology, biomaterial and material fabrication and more recently, translational research with a focus on process optimization and regulatory framework.
Alex published 8 peer-reviewed manuscripts (h-index: 8), presented at 8 conferences and filed 3 patents while a graduate student. He received a prestigious National Institutes of Health (NIH) Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (F31 Predoctoral Fellowship) as well as a highly competitive American Heart Association (AHA) Predoctoral Fellowship. Additionally, he was a 2-time T32 NIH Trainee for Cardiovascular Pathology and Cardiac Bioengineering. He has received awards from the NIH, AHA, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Biomedical Engineering Society, Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine and the University of Washington and was a National Science Foundation Fellow honorable mention. He is a current member of the Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative medicine.
